SSG Welcomes New Commissioners PDF Print E-mail

The Sunflower State Games is excited to welcome several new Sport Commissioners to our team in 2010.

The success of the Sunflower State Games can be attributed to the dedication and passion of volunteers and support staff who take on the responsibility of hosting a quality event. Every sport in the Sunflower State Games is directed by individuals who are interested in seeing their sport grow and thrive in our state. We would like to welcome the following Sport Commissioners to our team.

Adventure Race: Kelly Sumner

Kelly has been competing in adventure racing since the mid 1990's. In 2008 Kelly opened Offroad Fixation Adventure Racing and now hosts several events throughout the year. Kelly is no stranger to the Sunflower State Games as he assisted in designing the 2009 course at Lake Perry.

Bocce Ball: Paul Metzenthin

An avid bocce enthusiast, Paul has been playing the sport with a group of locals in Topeka for several years. The group meets regularly twice a week year round to compete in this traditional leisure sport..

Golf: Austin Tillman

Austin Tillman was recently named Golf Course Manager for the Lake Shawnee Golf Course. He has been heavily involved in hosting the SSG golf tournament in recent years as well as the Spring Fever Golf Scramble.

Miniature Golf: Kurtis Wells

Kurtis Wells is the Club House Manager for the Sports Center Family Fun Center in Topeka. Kurtis has been with Sports Center for ten years and is excited to promote the positive experience that the sport of miniature golf gives to the community.

Sailing: Tony Towle

Tony Towle is currently serving as Commodore for the Shawnee Yacht Club. Tony has competed in the Sunflower State Games since 2002.

Tennis: Kurt Davids

Kurt Davids is the Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach at Topeka West High School. Kurt has been a long time member of the USTA and is very active in promoting the sport of tennis in the Topeka area.

Ultimate Frisbee: Stephen Mock

Stephen Mock has been playing Ultimate Frisbee for five years with a club team out of Lawrence. Stephen is looking to expand interest in Ultimate Frisbee and hopes to increase the size of the SSG event.

Sand Volleyball: Jessica Rakestraw

Considered a "die-hard" in the area volleyball scene, Jessica is looking forward to growing the sport of Sand Volleyball with its inclusion in the 2010 Sunflower State Games. A former intern for SSG, Jessica is currently a Recreation Programmer for Shawnee County Parks & Recreation.
