An internship with the Sunflower State Games offers excellent insight into the world of sport event management, health and wellness, marketing/media relations, and graphic design and publication production. Interns have the opportunity to earn college credit as well as gain the experience necessary to compete for positions in these industries. There are multiple internship openings available for the spring and summer terms. Thank you for your interest in attaining an internship with the Sunflower State Games. Come join a young and energetic full-time staff and help conduct the largest amateur athletic event in the state of Kansas!

Start/End dates are somewhat flexible. Hours expected are 10-15 hours per week in the spring and 10-20 hours per week in the summer depending on the position. SSG is willing to work around school and work schedules. All interns will work from SSG Headquarters in Topeka. Performance base stipend is included in all internships. Summer interns are required to work all competition dates including: July 9-11, 16-18 & 23-25.



Spring Internships: January 25 - May 14

 

Sports Marketing and Special Event Operations Internship

Responsibilities

Work closely with staff in all Sports Marketing aspects including the research, coordination and implementation of marketing and promotional campaigns for each sport. Build and update a database consisting of contacts for potential athletes and target audiences.

Assist staff in organizing and planning Sunflower State Games’ Special Events including the Spring Fever Golf Tournament and Spring Cycling Series. Duties will include recruiting participants, securing new sponsors/donors while maintaining relationships with past sponsors/donors and assisting with the preparation and management of the events.

Qualifications

Junior/Senior level college student majoring in Marketing, Journalism, Communications or Sport Management.  Must be highly organized, detail oriented and able to manage multiple projects with little supervision.  Strong communications skills and professionalism a must.  Proficient in Microsoft office and web based e-mail marketing preferred. Previous design experience is favored.


Summer Internships: May 24 - August 6

 

Public Relations and Event Operations Internship

Responsibilities

Work closely with staff on all public relations issues including marketing campaigns, customer service, event promotion and volunteer recruitment. Assist staff  with operational issues including registration management, facility preparation and equipment distribution. Aid in planning special events including VIP Reception and the Athlete Festival.

Work with sport commissioners to coordinate logistics, prepare for events and assist in hosting numerous sports including but not limited to the following: Track and Field, Volleyball, Martial Arts, Wrestling, Soccer, Cycling and Basketball.  Assist with all data entry and sport database management needs. Aid with miscellaneous competition duties as needed.

Qualifications

Junior or Senior-level college students majoring in Journalism, Communication, Marketing, Sport Management or a related field.  Must be highly organized, detail oriented and able to organize multiple projects.  Must have strong computer skills and possess the ability to learn the online registration system developed for SSG. Strong communication skills and professionalism is a must as well as leadership skills. Must be able to work well with others in a fast-paced team environment.
