COMPETITION FORMAT

  • Athletes must provide their own racquets and practice balls. Competition balls will be provided.
  • Athletes may enter Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles events in KSG. Those entering doubles events must designate their partners on their entry forms. No partners will be assigned and no partners may be changed after the deadline. Athletes may compete with only one partner per event.
  • For doubles events, the age of the youngest partner as of December 31, 2017, determines the age category for competition.
  • The format for Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles will be a single-elimination tournament with a consolation bracket for first round losers. Subject to change based on entry numbers, space restrictions, or other circumstances.
  • If an athlete is entered in more than one tennis event, a situation may arise wherein he/she will have to play more than the USTA recommended number of matches in any given day. It is the responsibility of the athlete to make schedule conflicts known to the Sport Commissioner with sufficient time in order to attempt to reschedule or withdraw.
  • For competition purposes, age divisions will be as follows: 50-59, 60-69, and 70+. However medals will be given to each age division (50-54, 55-59, 60-64, etc.).
  • The tournament will be played outdoors on hard surface courts. Tennis balls to be used will be of a type designated for hard court play.
  • There will be a one-minute break every two games.
  • The scoring format for all singles and doubles matches will be two out of three tiebreak sets, in the event of split sets, a match tiebreak (first to 10 points, win by 2) will be played. There will be no full third sets. The only exception to this is that it may be modified in accordance with Forman, Item 3.
  • Competition must take place to determine qualifiers. If there is only one individual/team entered in an age division, the individual/team must complete the event to receive the gold medal. That individual/team will be placed with the closest age division to compete with—but not against—those athletes. Hence, there may be two gold medals awarded in such an event, and the win-loss record will not be considered.
  • All tennis matches will be conducted in accordance with United States Tennis Association (USTA) rules except as modified herein. Please visit www.usta.com for a copy of these rules.
