An internship with the Sunflower State Games offers excellent insight into the world of event planning and sports marketing and management. Interns have the opportunity to earn college credit as well as gain the experience necessary to compete for positions in these industries. There are multiple internship openings available for the spring, summer, and fall terms. Come help conduct the largest amateur athletic event in the state of Kansas!

How to Apply:

Submit a resume and cover letter outlining why you want to work with the SSG and what qualities, skills and attributes you possess. Please indicate which internship you are interested in. Please note: Sunflower State Games will accommodate students needing to fulfill standard requirements set by their school and is highly recommended to obtain an optimal experience.

Spring Semester/Summer Internships: January 18, 2019

Start/End dates are somewhat flexible. Minimum hours expected are 10-15 hours per week in the spring/fall and 15-20 hours per week in the summer depending on the position. SSG is willing to work around school and work schedules. All interns will work from SSG Headquarters in Topeka. Summer interns are required to work all competition dates including: July 12-28, 2019.

 


 

Spring Semester/Summer Internship: February 18 - July 29

Sport Marketing and Event Operations Internship

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with staff on all public relations issues including marketing campaigns, customer service, event promotion and volunteer recruitment.
  • Assist staff  with operational issues including registration management, facility preparation and equipment distribution.
  • Aid in planning special events including VIP Reception and the Athlete Festival.
  • Interns will be highly visible representing the organization at community and area events. Interns must be available to work weekends.
  • Work with sport commissioners to coordinate logistics, prepare for events and assist in hosting numerous sports.
  • Assist with all data entry and sport database management needs. Aid with miscellaneous competition duties as needed.
Qualifications

Junior or Senior-level college students majoring in Sports Management, Communications, Marketing or a related field.  Must be highly organized, detail oriented and able to organize multiple projects.  Must have strong computer skills and possess the ability to learn the online registration system developed for SSG. Strong communication skills and professionalism is a must as well as leadership skills. Must be able to work well with others in a fast-paced team environment.

 

Fall Internship: August 20 - December 3

Sport Marketing and Event Operations Internship

Responsibilities
  • Work closely with staff on all public relations issues including marketing campaigns, customer service, event promotion and volunteer recruitment.
  • Assist staff  with operational issues including registration management, facility preparation and equipment distribution. Manage all Social Media outlets for the organization.
  • Aid in planning special events including our VIP Reception, Celebration of Athletes Dinner, OctoberFast Kids Run, Winter Wonderland 5K, etc.
  • Interns will be highly visible representing the organization at community and area events. Interns must be available to work weekends.
  • Assist staff in preparation and planning for the Kansas Senior Games. Duties will include registration/web site management, equipment/supply preparation and venue/facility coordination.
  • Work with sport commissioners to coordinate logistics, prepare for events and assist in hosting numerous sports.
  • Assist with all data entry and sport database management needs. Aid with miscellaneous competition duties as needed. Assist in Post Event evaluation.
